LPC Institute of Piano Technology is a training program for motivated students in the field of piano technology. Piano tuning, repair and regulation will be taught in an immersive, hands-on program using practice pianos and the LPC Fleet. At the end of this course of study, diligent participants will be able to tune a piano competently, initiate common field repairs and prepare to study for the Piano Technician Guild Examinations. Membership in PTG is not required to attend the Institute. This class requires students to practice, purchase reading materials, and tools. A list of these materials will be provided before the Spring 2024 start date. In the interest of efficiently providing students with resources needed to work in the trade, it is recommended students obtain piano tuning software on a device. Although piano technicians may tune by ear (aural tuning), this class will concentrate on utilizing tuning software to learn to tune solid unisons and gain competency expeditiously. There are many free and affordable apps available. For those interested in augmenting their tuning practice, see the catalogue for the LPC Aural Piano Tuning class being offered this Spring semester.
