Get ready for our annual Literary Arts Festival keynote speaker and join Michelle Cruz Gonzales, author of
The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band (2016) to discuss
High Desert: Black, Punk, Nowhere (2022), the acclaimed graphic memoir by James Spooner, director of the award-winning documentary film Afropunk. In
High Desert, James is mixed race, acutely aware of his Blackness, and he doesn't know where he fits until he meets Ty, a young Black punk who introduces him to the school outsiders—skaters, unhappy young rebels also coming of age in Apple Valley, a thirsty, desert town somewhere in California. We will start the discussion with light refreshments and an ice breaker activity.
April 24 @ 2:30-4 and/or May 2 at 4-5:30

Copies of his book will soon be available at the library and
